5th of July

Last night, Benny was relaxing before the fireworks started.

Then the fireworks started. I can only imagine what he did during the show, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t exactly happy with the noises.

Here is the condensed fireworks show.

4th of July!

Yayy!!! The official relaxation day of the summer!

This morning I ran my first ever 5K, or 3.2 miles.  I am quite happy with my results.  There were 180 runners, and I came in 83.  This might not sound great, but it was through the hills, it was my first race, and as a 13 year old, I had a little disadvantage.  I ran it in 26 minutes.  That is just over 8 minutes a mile, 3 miles in a row! Now my legs are sore :( .

There was an amazing guy there.  He ran it in 15 minutes!!! That’s 5 minutes a mile!!! I can’t run ONE five minute mile, let alone 3 in a row!!!

So, then we relaxed and played badminton in the back yard.  I am practicing my reverse grip method :) .

Imagine a badminton racket in his hand, instead of a lightsaber. :)  We are all pretty harsh to the shuttlecock!

So, now, my cat is currently enjoying his final relaxation time before the fireworks start.  The firecrackers last night drove him crazy. :’( poor thing.

Yesterday’s Description and Today’s Photo Essay

Yesterday I had a field trip in Chinese camp.  First, we went to go and eat at a Chinese restaurant. It was absolutely delicious.

Then, we went to a Chinese supermarket.  I got a pack of Pockys, a packet of White Rabbits, a bag of fortune cookies, and a box of little wafers.

Then, today we had our final performance of things we learned in Chinese.  I was in a play of the Three Monks.

I am the skinny monk in blue. :) 我是瘦和祥。

And this fail digger.  I got this pic on the way home.  It’s hard to tell the size without something to compare it to, but trust me, this is like a toy!

Chinese Play

I have a play today in Chinese Camp.  I’ll try to get my mom to get pictures.  More about yesterday’s field trip later today. Sorry about this.  I was completely booked yesterday.  The minute I got home from camp, I had to go to my baseball game.  I got walked twice, got hit in the arm, and got a hit.  Nothing came to me in the field. :(

The Brain is Amazing

The brain is amazing.  How can a little 3 pound lump of tissue control all of the processes within the body? How does our brain maintain conciousness for “us?”  What do we really mean when we say “me?”  There are so many things about the brain that we are trying to find out, but many things may never be figured out.

First, let’s talk about what the brain is. Your brain is a whopping 90% water! It is a combination between gray matter and white matter that resides in your skull.  This gray matter is what makes your brain tick.  It is the stuff that processes information.

Inside gray matter are neurons, the computing cells of your brain. Neurons receive chemical information from other neurons, process it, and then pass on their calculations to other neurons.  Imagine 100 billion people in booths trying to communicate with flashlights to collectively decide on a move in a game of chess.  It gets pretty complicated!  This is why neurology is such a difficult area of science.  It is hard for us to fathom how it would work.

This picture of a neuron provides good detail on the parts. The dendrites obtain information from other neurons.  Then, the neuron sends a message to the next neuron through an axon.

Different sensors such as your ears, tongue, eyes, nose, and touch sensors around your body all gain information.  They send this information to the brain, which then processes it, and decides what the muscles should do based on this information.  One problem that neurologists are have a problem with, is how does consciousness fit into all of this?

Imagine the little people with flashlights.  They all live their private little life, but somehow, those little flashlight bursts create your though process and “you.”  When I talk to “you”, I personally think I’m more communicating with your conscious mind.  I don’t believe I’m communicating with your soul or anything, just the neurons involved in creating your conscious self.

My idea isn’t perfect though.  Using this frame of thought, theoretically, a computer could someday replace the brain, or at least emulate it.  This is a very disturbing thought, but I guess it may be possible.

Some processing neurons are not in the “conscious spectrum” meaning that they don’t have to listen to “you.” For instance, the heart pumps when it wants to pump, not when your conscious self wants it to.

Another question.  How do these cells store complex memories?  People say that you remember everything your senses pick up, but not all of them are able to be called upon by our conscious mind.

Even though your brain is amazing, it not perfect by any stretch!  Your brain can be fooled by optical illusions like the one above. In the illusion, your brain thinks that square A and B are very different.  However, if we could take out all of the confusing stuff, like the board and the shadow, then we would see that they are the exact same color.  Try it!  Print out the picture, cut out the squares, and compare them.

I hope by now that you are convinced that the brain is amazing, but if you’re not, I have a few facts up my sleeve. :)

  • Scientist believe that the brain (in digital terms) can hold 1 to 10 terabytes of information!
  • Your brain is more active when you are asleep than when you are awake.  This is because during a dream, your brain is making it up, but in real life, your brain only has to process the stuff.
  • Your brain runs on 10 watts of electricity!
  • Neurons’ chemical messages whiz around your body at 268 miles per hour!
  • Your brain can compute 10 quadrillion processes in 1 second!

I hope this was a very thought provoking post, and I want to include my handout in school on the subject.

Up Review

The other day I watch the movie Up. I loved it!  It had great characters and an engaging storyline.

Pixar truly is an amazing company.  Normally, animated films do not have much emotion in them, but Pixar is definitely an exception.  Their animated films have characters that you can really connect to.  Pixar also did wallE, Ratatouille (I hope I spelled that right!), Cars, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Monsters inc., Toy Story 1 and 2, and A Bug’s Life.  Of all of the animated movies made recently, I think that Pixar ones are definitely the best.

So the movie starts out with a short film of the  sort that usually precedes Pixar movies.  It is funny, and sweet, and all sorts of nice things! I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I’ll give you the choice on whether you want to watch it or not.

Partly Cloudy

So, the feature film starts with a series of scenes showing the life of Mr. Carl Fredricksen.  Pixar shows yet again how amazing it is at wordlessly or almost wordlessly stirring emotions within us.  It is a very gut wrenching 3 minutes, that has half of the people in the movie theater crying by the end of it.

He is an old retired balloon salesman (right) that yearns for adventure. When the people from “Shady Oaks Retirement” come a’callin’, he is forced to go on that adventure, or go to the retirement home. He chooses adventure.  He does this by attaching balloons to his house and floating “up.”

Mr. Fredricksen evolves immensly throughout the movie. He starts as a grumpy, crusty old widower, but ends up as a kind and loving grandfather-ish fellow.

On his adventure, he is joined by a “Wilderness Explorer” named Russell.  Russell is particularly pudgy, and is prepared for just about anything. The “Wilderness Explorer” is very much like a boy scout.  All he needs to become a “‘Senior’ Wilderness Explorer” is his “assisting the elderly” badge.  He relentlessly pesters Mr. Fredricksen, his elderly assistee, asking what ways he can help him.

On their journey, they meet two animals, dog named Dug, and an exotic bird named Kevin by Russell.

Dug is an all out hilarious dog, which owns a strange collar that translates his thoughts into English so he and people may communicate.  It isn’t perfect though.  His speech is a little choppy, and lacks contractions, but that makes him endearing in a way.

Kevin has an extreme addiction to chocolate, and an extreme dislike for Mr. Fredicksen.  Later, “Kevin” turns out to be a mother of 3 chicks.

Up is a wonderful movie with evolving characters.  I would recommend it for anyone. Adults will love it, and kids will find it funny enough to be enjoyable.  It is appropriate for all ages, with minimal violence.  I hope you watch it!
